Jeff Kurtzman Managing Director. An entrepreneur, finance/ops/strategic advisor, and active angel investor, he is particularly interested in promoting the continued development of the startup and emerging growth ecosystem in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Jeff started his career at Deutsche Bank and then went on to start his first company Better World Books, a socially responsible online book store. Their goal was to keep used books in circulation and out of landfills, and for every book purchased, one is donated. Jeff took the CFO role and helped grow the company to $25+ million in annual revenue and 250+ employees within 5 years without taking any outside investment. Jeff was also part of the development of a cutting-edge enterprise software platform, developed for internal use and then licensed to other large volume e-commerce companies. The software platform was spun out and eventually acquired. The company has become the largest used book seller on Amazon and is forecasting $70+ million in 2017 revenue.
Jeff also co-founded or advised numerous startups and small-cap businesses (typically as CFO and/or COO), gathering experience in SaaS, E-commerce, Telecom, FinTech, Media, and CleanTech sectors. Jeff took on the role of CEO at Aid Through Trade, a founding member of the Fair-Trade Federation that produces handmade goods in Nepal. In 2 years, he turned around the struggling company. While CEO, the number of staff employed in Nepal more than doubled from 50 to 125 and top-line revenue grew by over 125%.
In early 2015, Jeff turned his focus to angel investing and advising startups in the Mid-Atlantic region. He has made several angel investments across a variety of industries and is on the Board of Directors for the Baltimore Angels. Jeff also co-founded Mavin Ventures, a “growth equity” venture capital firm focused on companies in the Mid-Atlantic that could scale efficiently with relatively small amounts of capital and would benefit from active
involvement of its operator/entrepreneur founders.
Jeff graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of Notre Dame in 2001 with a double major in Finance/Business Economics and Computer Applications.
Jeff enjoys traveling the world and has visited 30+ countries so far. Jeff’s worldly excursions helps enable him to bring a diversity of ideas and experience to the companies he works with in both the CFO and COO compacity. Jeff also enjoys live music (all genres), golf, mountain biking, trying new restaurants (any cuisine), and is always trying to learn new things.
